I did it! I knocked out 100 push-ups this morning! My goal today was to get to 90 and once I got there I said what the heck it’s only 10 more. I must admit I had to take a couple of breaks on the last 10 but I made it through. What an exhilarating feeling! A GREAT way to start the day! I would like to donate my 100 to the Ronald McDonald House Foundation. I have a soft spot in my heart for families with kids who have to be in a hospital. Thank you for starting the challenge, it has changed my life. Steve

Who is 54 years of age suffering from Multiple Sclerosis. He was told he would be in a wheelchair within 6 months, nearly 6 years ago. Today, this accomplished gentleman carefully walked toward us and showed us his prowess at the one-armed push-up by doing several in a row in our main lobby Suffice to say, most of us simply struck a pose in his honor; but were inspired beyond words could say.

I just wanted to let you know that I started the New Year by soloing Pikes Peak from the Crags and twice while I was on my snowshoe/hike/climb I stopped to do some pushups, only 25 each time but that was more than plenty as the hike was grueling. Thanks for making me feel a welcomed part of the team!

The steep trail of the Crags was covered with 12-24 inches of snow, some had been packed but up the steep sides I was breaking trail the whole way until I reached the windswept skree fields at the top. This is where I did my first set of 25 pushups. As I continued the trek along the ridge to Devil’s Playground I gazed in awe, and realized why all those people who thought I was crazy were missing out on the wonderful views that I got to take in on the very first day of 2010. I never actually summitted the peak itself, once I reached Devil’s Playground the exhaustion from 5 hours of constant pushing I perched myself upon a rock to take a few more photos and to call someone to meet me at the bottom to pull me out. This was my next set of 25 pushups.

The more energy I used the bigger my smile got, what I refer to as the “perma-grin” was plastered on my face. It has begun my year of firsts: My first solo attempt of Pikes Peak, first time from the Crags, first time to snowshoe, first time to get my truck stuck in the snow when I couldn’t get it out on my own, first time to do pushups on Pikes Peak. With all this behind me, I just want to say that I hope this year continues with firsts and bests of success in both my professional and personal life. Here’s to a bright new year!

CMR Team: I am pleased to announce the results for the 1st annual "Mountain of Hope" Swim & Spin-a-thon fundraiser September 12 - 13, 2009 where all proceeds benefited the Marian House Soup Kitchen. As you know, Catholic Charities has been serving the Colorado Springs community since 1968 and has been operating the Marian House Soup kitchen since 1985. In June 2009, the new soup kitchen opened its doors and the number of people coming to them for a hot meal has increased over 40% in just the past 12 months to over 500 a day. The Marian House is the only soup kitchen in the Pikes Peak region that offers a hot meal 365 days of the year.

Thank you to the creative organizers on CMR’s DELIGHT team, the tenacious fund-raisers in Aquatics and Fitness, the high-energy Instructors in Fitness, the hard-working mountain-building/bike-hauling/can-toting executers in Operations.. and all those who volunteered their time, money and energy toward this event. I am pleased to say we raised ~$5500 for this wonderful cause.

Special appreciation goes to all those who woke at 4:30am and were there Pushing/Swimming/Spinning/Can-handling for this event in 50 degree temperatures yesterday. Your good work will feed nearly 2000 hungry COS citizens. Thank you all. Laura

I was working out in the gym this morning and started talking to the fitness director about our "100 push ups" challenge. After showing her the website and reading some inspirational stories, she was hooked. She was so excited that she grabbed the closest employee and we started pushing for the camera. I'm really enjoying the benchmark camaraderie here in Florida, thanks Anne and Eric. Next I will be working on getting the other departments to step up and try the challenge. CMR push ups have made their way down to south Florida.

A great competition today. WOW. For those who were not present, we had a good dozen at the wall. Many made it to 4 minutes. Our very own TurfTamer, Dave Grimes surprised us all by surpassing 5 minutes with perfect form (and for a minute or two with crossed leg)--all he needed was a smoke and a Coors to make that photo priceless. WonderWomanLegsofSteel and Princess Jess came in 3rd. Lightning Aussie ranked 2nd (but held her form to perfection longer than all): The Fran and Fleet Feet tied for 1st (surpassing 10 minutes). As the stakes have grown higher, Drill Sergeant Lopez has insisted on judging the next round and demanding perfect 90 degree form from all. We’ll let you know when the next round is just as soon as Group Rooms closes a whale! I guarantee it will not be for the faint-hearted.

Upon rolling into work today, I was confronted with a big number.

It wasn't the number of pushups we had to do today, which are 62, it wasn't the number of site visits we had today, no, it was the number of squats we had to do!

Are you ready for the number? 1765! That is equivilant to 29 minutes and 25 seconds worth of squats. Now, after our great coaching yesterday from Drill Sergeant Lopez, we all know how to do a proper "chair squat."

I have done 180 so far today, I know Bulldog has done 480, and FoN, GiT, Legs, Princess Jess, IBT Master, and Champ have done upwards of 240.

Have fun with it today, but pace yourself, and take care of yourself. (BUT PUSH AS FAR AS YOU CAN!)

CMR Pushers with Olympic Gold Medalist, Henry Cejudo

Several of us were fortunate to meet Henry Cejudo, Olympic Gold Medalist, and his trainer, Eric last night. In the words of Eric, “push-ups are a perfect exercise”. He proceeded to show us his form in Will Rogers lounge with many fans looking on . This morning they both returned to push with several Pushers at morning stand-up. For those of you who don’t know Henry’s story, he was featured on the front page of the COS Gazette Sports section yesterday and is in the USA Today today. He is the son of illegal immigrants; born and raised in L.A. He is a graduate of Coronado High School here in the Springs. He didn’t wrestle until he was 12. He was the youngest American ever to win a gold medal in the freestyle wrestling event at the Beijing Olympics. Now 22, he is sought after for speaking engagements world-wide. We are honored to have him light the torch in COS tonight for the kick-off of the State Games of America competition.

Fitness vs Sales

Hatchcover shows his prowess at the wall squat while enjoying libations at a local drinking establishment. This morning his peers put him through the paces attempting to surpass Fit Del's 393 seconds yesterday. Bar Curls, Guns in Tights, IBT Master, Hatchcover Pusher, Legs, Princess Jess, Pecs, Bulldog and I.M.F.o.N. gave the wall squat hold our best shot this morning. Couldn’t hold our own w/ Del’s record yesterday…but we’ll keep trying as we expect 550 GRNs to close this week (that would be 9 min, 16 seconds for those who need a calculator).

FITNESS:

Rumor has it all others in fitness petered out.

1st Place: Del Vigil (Wonder Woman!) 393 seconds.

SALES:

3rd Place: Guns in Tights
Tied for 2nd: I.M.F.o.N. and Princess Jess at 240 seconds
1st Place: Bulldog 266 seconds.

Ok, bad news first. We did not book over 100 transient room nights on Friday. Good news, we don't have to do any pushups!

More good news, we booked 580 group room nights on Friday! Bad news, we have to do 580 seconds of squats!

On Friday, the sales team knew about this in advance, so they all did 120 seconds of squats. They are ahead of the game, but nowhere near halftime!

Iron Maiden has challenged us to do all of the squats at one time! She just had a birthday on Friday, I think she gets YOUNGER each year!

Pushing to a New Level at CCOC Fitness

In the spirit of expanding upon CMR's Challenge, CCOC fitness has decided to ring a bell after any member or guest completes a workout. Fitness staff and any others that want to participate will do 10 pushups in honor of their completed workout.

History of the bell:
There is no record of when the bell was invented. There are pictures from early Chinese dynasties which clearly show bells, not the open method version beloved of bell ringers but the “Noddy” variety. Indeed they have been used by development of written language. They are mentioned in Exodus as part of Hebrew worship and they are shown decorating the robes of priests. In medieval times bells were steeped in superstition. This was probably because of their long association with religion. They were “baptized” and then had the power to ward off evil spells and spirits. This custom then led to the “Passing bell” which was rung to run off evil spirits lurking near a deathbed to take away a departing soul. Consecrated bells were believed to dispel thunder and lightning and to calm storms at sea for all of which demons were believed to responsible. This is just a mention of the superstitions that are a great part of the world’s history. In the classic movie “It’s a Wonderful Life,” there is a significant line that states, “Every time a bell rings, an angel gets its wings.” The significance of bells from a church ringing after a wedding signifies a celebration of the union.

This is indeed what the Fitness Center is wanting to focus on…the celebration of someone completing a workout; which in turn signifies them reaching a goal they had not attained the day before. We feel that working out physically enhances the mind, body and spirit. In our line of work this is truly a celebration!
